A unique project for safer and more efficient maritime navigation

Norway is embracing innovation with plans to construct the world’s first tunnel for ships. The ambitious project, the Stad Ship Tunnel, aims to bypass the hazardous waters around the Stad Peninsula, enhancing safety and efficiency for maritime traffic in the region. The Norwegian government is currently seeking construction companies to take on this groundbreaking project.

The planned tunnel will be approximately 1.7 kilometers long, 37 meters high, and 26.5 meters wide. It is designed to accommodate both smaller vessels and larger freight and passenger ships. The primary goal is to avoid the often stormy and dangerous coastal route, which presents significant challenges, especially during winter. This will greatly enhance the safety of ships and their crews.

A global first in infrastructure

The Stad Ship Tunnel is the first project of its kind anywhere in the world and could serve as a blueprint for similar infrastructure in other countries. Norway once again demonstrates its innovative spirit and willingness to tackle technical challenges to strengthen both its local economy and international maritime traffic.

Call for construction companies

The Norwegian government has officially opened the tender process for the tunnel's construction. Interested companies from the construction and engineering sectors are invited to submit their concepts and proposals. Construction is expected to begin in 2025 and will take approximately four years to complete.

A boost for the region

In addition to improving maritime safety, the project is expected to bring economic benefits to the region. Local businesses and workers will benefit from the construction phase, and the tunnel could boost tourism along Norway’s coastline in the long term.

With the Stad Ship Tunnel, Norway once again highlights its leadership in innovative infrastructure and reinforces its commitment to sustainable, forward-looking construction projects.
