Cross-border train to Sweden opens new opportunities for Northern Europe travel
Finland is set to be directly connected to the European rail network for the first time, with a new cross-border train service between Tornio and Haparanda expected to launch in summer 2026. This marks a significant step in improving overland access to Northern Europe.
From continental Europe to Lapland by train
The new connection makes it possible to travel long distances across Europe by rail, linking Central Europe with Finnish Lapland. Travelers will be able to reach northern Finland via Sweden, with a transfer at the border – enabled by infrastructure upgrades and new agreements simplifying cross-border rail operations.
A practical but not seamless connection
Due to different track gauges, Finnish trains will terminate in Tornio, requiring passengers to switch trains in Haparanda. Despite this, the process is expected to be straightforward and significantly more efficient than previous options.
