Nature, wildlife, and sustainability combine in a unique outdoor experience in Southern Sweden
In the southern Swedish region of Blekinge, also known as “Sweden’s Garden by the Sea,” a new hiking trail is set to open in spring 2025: the Eriksbergsleden. This approximately 12-kilometre circular route runs through Eriksberg Nature Reserve, the largest wildlife park in Northern Europe. The trail offers a unique blend of untouched nature, rich biodiversity, and encounters with wild animals in one of Sweden’s most scenic regions.
A path through the heart of the wildlife reserve
Eriksberg Nature Reserve is a fenced conservation area in Blekinge where European bison, red deer, mouflon sheep, and wild boar roam freely. Until now, the area could only be accessed by car or through guided tours. The new trail makes the landscape accessible to hikers for the first time, with measures in place to protect the animals and their habitat.
The route offers a diverse landscape, ranging from dense forests and open meadows to rocky coastal cliffs overlooking the Baltic Sea archipelago.
Along the Eriksbergsleden, visitors will find viewpoints, rest areas, and educational signage. A new visitor centre is also planned, offering insights into nature conservation, biodiversity, and the history of the reserve. The trail is designed for day hikes, nature photography, and environmental education, making it suitable for school groups and guided eco-tours alike.
Blekinge – a hidden gem for outdoor travellers
The Blekinge region is still something of an insider tip for nature and outdoor travel. With its combination of archipelago coastlines, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and historical manor houses, it offers a varied landscape in a compact area—ideal for hiking, cycling, kayaking, or simply relaxing. The Eriksbergsleden is a perfect addition to Blekinge’s sustainable and nature-based tourism offerings.
The Eriksbergsleden trail offers a gentle and respectful way to experience Blekinge’s unique nature. Starting in spring 2025, it will become a new highlight for visitors who want to explore Sweden off the beaten track—on foot, at a slower pace, and in harmony with the natural world.
