The German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union Nabu has published its Cruise Ranking 2024. Hurtigruten and Havila came out on top.
The cruise industry still has a long way to go before the environment and climate are no longer so heavily impacted. However, some companies are showing what the future of cruises could look like. Measures that efficiently reduce the need for fossil fuels include: Batteries, energy-saving designs, slower speed, and optimization of technology from hull to propeller. A central point is the use of shore power, which makes it possible to completely dispense with engines during berthing times.
Shipping companies Hurtigruten and Havila on the top two places
In their annual ranking, NABU assessed a total of twelve shipping companies that sail in Europe. Even if progress is slow, none of the companies ignores climate and environmental issues any longer.
The shipping companies Hurtigruten and Havila take the top two places. Many of their ships are technically equipped to reduce their CO2 emissions. However, even the leaders in this year's ranking do not offer a cruise that does not harm the environment or the climate. Out of a possible 15 points, the front-runner Hurtigruten achieved 10 points.
