Iceland’s first cascading waterfall lagoon combines gourmet dining, aurora views, and sustainability

This summer, a truly unique wellness destination opens in Southwest Iceland: Laugarás Lagoon – the country’s first cascading waterfall lagoon. Set along the banks of the Hvítá River in the picturesque village of Laugarás, the site is known for its green fields, geothermal energy, and local organic farms. Now, it adds a major new stop on Iceland’s famed Golden Circle route.

More than just a hot spring

Covering around 1,000 m² and maintaining a constant water temperature of 38–40 °C, the new lagoon offers a two-tiered bathing experience with cascading water features and stunning architecture. Designed by T.ark Architects and Efla Engineering, with lighting by Hildiberg, the facility features glass walls and Icelandic wood to ensure uninterrupted views of the river and landscape. Visitors can enjoy a dry and a steam sauna, a cold plunge pool, a hidden grotto, and two swim-up bars – all set within lush forest surroundings that offer ultimate peace and relaxation.

Culinary excellence meets sustainability: Ylja Restaurant

Heading up the culinary side is renowned Icelandic chef Gísli Matt, formerly of the celebrated SLIPPURINN in Vestmannaeyjar. His new concept, Ylja (meaning "warmth" in Icelandic), blends traditional Icelandic ingredients with modern cooking techniques. The seasonal menu features wild herbs, berries, seaweed, and local produce from greenhouses and fisheries. Dishes are often prepared over open fire and incorporate fermentation and zero-waste principles to support a circular food system.

The restaurant seats 80 guests indoors with additional outdoor seating. A private dining room for up to 38 people is available and includes Wi-Fi, projection facilities, and artwork by Sigmundur Freysteinsson.

Three ways to experience Laugarás Lagoon

Named after native Icelandic trees, guests can choose between three experience packages:

  • Birki (Standard) from approx. £40: Includes full access to the lagoon, private changing room with premium toiletries
  • Lerki (Premium) from approx. £55: Adds towel service and a complimentary drink at the swim-up bar
  • Ösp (Deluxe) from approx. £93: Includes a two-course tasting menu at Ylja Restaurant and access to a private changing booth

A new hotspot for aurora seekers

In winter, Laugarás Lagoon becomes a prime viewing spot for the northern lights. Thanks to its secluded location, guests can enjoy breathtaking aurora displays while soaking in the warm geothermal waters – a true bucket list experience. Located just 94 km from Reykjavík, and between Geysir (33 km) and Gullfoss (43 km), the lagoon is ideally placed for visitors touring the Golden Circle.

Whether you're a local, a second-home owner, or a winter visitor, Laugarás Lagoon promises a unique blend of comfort, nature, and culinary discovery.
