Viking Line is trailblazing safety innovations in maritime travel

Viking Line has been named Security Organization of the Year 2024 by Finland’s security industry. The award, presented at the Finnish Security Awards, celebrates the company’s exceptional improvements in safety measures for both passengers and staff on its vessels. Viking Line’s pioneering approach to maritime safety, including cutting-edge technologies, earned widespread recognition from the jury.

Leading with technology for safer seas

One of Viking Line’s standout achievements is becoming the first shipping company worldwide to implement EloCare, an automated radar monitoring system from EloTec, in its vessels’ detention facilities. This system tracks vital signs to prevent fatalities and is complemented by a unique emergency alarm system.

Additionally, Viking Line played a key role in the EU-funded SecurePax project, testing advanced technologies such as x-ray scanning for baggage and passengers and facial recognition systems in terminals.

Training staff for emergency preparedness

"Developing safety means constantly enhancing our knowledge, methods, and technologies. Our skilled staff, both on board and in terminals, are essential to this process," explains Christian Hartvik, Security Superintendent at Viking Line. The company prioritizes regular training sessions for all employees to ensure they are prepared for various emergency scenarios.

Cross-border collaboration for maritime safety

Viking Line’s commitment to safety extends beyond Finland, involving partnerships with organizations like Feelready, Elotec, the Wega Group Oy, and the Port of Turku. The company also collaborates with authorities in Finland, Sweden, and Estonia, participating in joint maritime safety drills and exercises.

Through these initiatives, Viking Line sets new benchmarks for safety and security in the maritime industry, ensuring that both passengers and crew feel secure throughout their journeys.
