Bessegen hiking trail becomes the fifth National Scenic Hike

In order to counteract the wear and tear of the trails caused by tourist crowds and litter problems, Norway has certified some popular hiking trails as "Nasjonale Turiststier" National Scenic Hikes. The trail up the Bessegen ridge is a new addition to this list.

The National Scenic Hikes are particularly well maintained. Up to 15 national trails can be approved. A trail retains its status for five years, after which it must go through a new procedure to keep its status.

Up to 60,000 visitors hike the Besseggen ridge every year. The circular hike is 13 kilometres long and with a duration of six to eight hours, it is only recommended for experienced hikers. On the ridge you have a breathtaking view over the turquoise waters of Lake Gjende and the Jotunheimen mountain range.
