Postponement of the ban on emissions for large cruise ships to 2032 in the Norwegian Fjords
The Norwegian government has postponed the ban on emissions for cruise ships over 10,000 GT in the UNESCO World Heritage fjords, originally scheduled for January 1, 2026, by six years to 2032. The Ministry of Environment justified the decision by stating that the necessary technology for the largest ships is currently not sufficiently developed.
The Norwegian shipping company Havila Voyages, which, along with Hurtigruten, operates the coastal mail service on behalf of the state, sharply criticized the decision, calling it a "misjudgment." CEO Brent Martini stated in a press release that this decision weakens the urgently needed measures for a more sustainable future. Pia Kuusisto, Head of Sales for DACH, also expressed concerns about the decision.
Despite the government’s decision, Havila Voyages remains committed to its course. Brent Martini reaffirmed: "Our ships will continue to sail through the Geirangerfjord and other areas such as the Hjorundfjord and the Trollfjord emission-free, regardless of political decisions." Pia Kuusisto added that the company has already proven with its vessels that emission-free sailing is possible. Clear requirements are essential to achieve the climate goals by 2050.
