AIDAdiva opens Sweden's first shore power facility for cruise ships at the Port of Stockholm
On 25 July 2024, the AIDAdiva docked in Stockholm, opening Sweden's first shore power system for cruise ships. From now on, cruise ships docking in Stockholm harbour will be able to use shore power during their stay. AIDA Cruises played a key role in the two-year planning and construction phase of the facility.
AIDA Cruises is considered a pioneer in the implementation of shore power technologies in the cruise industry. The company has been integrating this technology into the planning and construction of its ships since 2004. It took over a decade for AIDA Cruises to start regular operations at Europe's first shore-side power plant in the Port of Hamburg Altona in 2017. The use of shore power significantly reduces local emissions while ships are in port.
In April 2022, AIDA Cruises signed an agreement with Cruise Baltic, a network of 32 ports and destinations, to use shore power in the Baltic Sea ports. Since 2021, cruise ships have been able to use shore power in Rostock-Warnemünde and Kiel, Germany. This option was extended to ports in Norway and the UK in 2022 and to Danish ports in 2023. From 2024, all AIDA ships departing from German ports will receive shore power during their stay.
