There is a whole range of activities that you can experience here in summer:

Nordic Walking around Kellarilampi

Nordic walking finds its origin here in Finland and becomes more and more popular in Europe. Maybe you are experienced yourself...? An active way of walking with sticks; you will use about 90% of all the muscles in your body. A pretty healthy way, indeed! The guide will explain the basic techniques. Nordic Walking through the natural scenery of Syöte with a guide is an experience you really should try, while enjoying the splendid and unspoiled nature and flora and fauna around you. Along the way we will enjoy some coffee or refreshments and cake.

Nordic Walking

Canoe safari on lake Naamanka

The water of the lake is a mirror projecting the sky and the scenery around it. A perfect and peaceful place to paddle around. The guide will teach you the basics of canoeing. The water is easy and calm so no experience is needed. The canoes are suitable for two persons, so pleasure for two! We will take care of all materials, clothing if needed, guidance and instructions. On the lakeshore we will have a break to make campfire and cook coffee and eat some cakes.

Canoing on lake Naamanka

Following the stream by Canoe on river Pärjänjoki in the national park

The river Pärjänjoki finds is way peacefully through the Syöte national park. With two persons per canoe you will go, following the stream. The guide will give the needed materials and instructions and leads the way. While paddling left and right of the canoe you will keep it in the right position. The calm stream will do the rest. Along the way, on the shore, we will stop to make lunch and coffee by the open fire!

Trying to get lucky with river-shore fishing

At the cold, running floods of the small rivers that flow to the bigger Pärjänjoki river there is a special small fish moving around in the meandering streams. We pack the equipment and then go by car towards the forest. Then we hike a little alongside the stream to find the right spot to start fishing. The guide will teach you how and where to fish. A campfire will be made to enjoy some coffee with pulla. Enjoy this peaceful moment out in the unspoiled nature and relax.

Fishing

Learning fly-fishing in the river

An other exciting fishing experience is possible. Trying to learn the skills of fly fishing while standing in the floating river. A special way of waving your line over the water and hoping for a good catch. Transfer to the fishing place. Local fisherman will guide you again and train you in the skills of fly-fishing on the floating river. Along the way, on the shore, we will make coffee by the open fire!

Rafting on a fast floating river in Ruka Family Route

The famous River Kitkajoki (near Ruka- Kuusamo) provides you with unforgettable moments in the wilderness. The whole family can take part in this event and enjoy the clean air and water. The family route has seven rapids and they are classified from I to III, which means many exciting but safe moments in the white water. You will get all the necessary equipment for river rafting (rain coat, rubber boots, life vest and a helmet).
Duration: 3 hrs./ 14 km on the river
Minimum age: 5 years
Level of difficulty: easy

Note: You have to have own transportation from Iso Syöte to Ruka. It will take about 1.5 hours drive)

Iso Syote Rafting

Big wild rapids

The demanding Wild Route of River Kitkajoki, leads you f or example over the beautiful rapid Myllykoski and demanding 900 m long rapid Aallokkokoski. The most breathtaking rapid Jyrävä you will pass by walking, because it is too dangerous to go over. Rafting trip takes about five hours and includes outdoor lunch by the campfire. In the end of the river rafting trip there is many little rapids, which are surrounded with untouched nature of Oulanka National park. The trip is going to end close to the Russian border from where transfer by car is arranged back to Ruka.
Duration: 6 hrs. / 20 km on the river

Visit a husky farm

Although, in summertime, huskies mostly have a “holiday” you still can come and see the huskies at the husky farm. In winter huskies are full in action, in summer they stay at the farm where you can meet them in their own environment. The owner will guide you around and can tell you all about the husky sledge drives in winter and the way they train and take care of the dogs. He can also show you all materials and demonstrate it to you. Welcome at the farm!

Stay in a salt room

Salt is purifying. Already in the middle ages monks knew how to use the natural salt caves for treating and revitalizing people. In the oldest museum-store (since 1882) of Taivalkoski, named Jalavan Kauppa, they have reconstructed a salt room. Floor, walls and ceiling are pure salt. Enter the room and relax for about 40 minutes in one of the comfortable chairs. The air will be circulated and will purify your skin from the outside and when inhaling it will also purify your airways, lungs and sinuses from the inside. Some refreshment, coffee or tea with cake will be served.

Mountain biking in Iso Syöte

The direct surroundings of Iso Syöte is a mountain biker's paradise. There are loads of beautiful and relatively easy but speedy single tracks and wider trails which offer you great flow while you can still let your eyes rest and enjoy the beautiful scenery -you'll be astonished!
There are several open wilderness huts and lean-to shelters in the area where we can stop for a break to enjoy tasty snacks and wonderful nature.
No matter how experienced (or not) rider you are, there are very well marked trails of different length and level. We can offer you guided bike tours or just the bike rental to explore the Iso Syöte nature on your own.

River tubing in Syöte

Exciting experience, paddling on a river tube down the stream of the Pärjänjoki river.
Transfer to the starting place where you will get the equipment. Each one steps in his/ her own river tube. Let yourself float where the water takes you and control the course with your paddling. Big splashing fun for everyone, no age limit, as long as you can swim. Guide will come along and takes care of transportation back to hotel.

Traditional wilderness dinner in a Lappish hut:‘ kota Hanhilampi’

In the serene, peaceful and natural beauty of a small lake called Hanhilampi, surrounded by trees and hills you can enjoy a typical Finnish, traditional wilderness diner cooked over open fire. After a welcome-drink you can select a number of starters (reindeer meat, salmon, bread, salads etc) while the main course (Karelian stew) is being prepared over open fire. You can help with the cooking if you want. A sweet dessert and coffee or tea afterwards completes it all. We serve lemonade, beer, wine (max 2 included) and water with the food, which is already included. We also take care of the transfers for you. We leave for Hanhilampi at 18.00 h from the hotel reception (a min. of 12 participants is needed).
