The Sokeri-Jussi Tavern cooks unpretentious, delicious meals using local ingredients. Our specialty is the "Grandma’s Kitchen" - just like Grandma used to make, traditional Northern Ostrobothnian food at its best.
It appears difficult to guess the true age of this wooden building. It was first mentioned in documents in 1850. It is known that the oldest part of the house used to be used to store big boat parts and motors.
Today this traditional restaurant still radiates the worker charm of the former storehouse - high rooms with dark, sturdy wooden walls. The rooms were also previously used to store sugar and salt. Pikisaari is a small island which was well known for its shipbuilding industry.
The restaurant was named after one of the last ships which was built on the island: Sokeri-Jussi (Sugar-Jack). This boat waited for years in the present-day Restaurant Sokeri-Jussi for its motor. It is said that a consultant from a Finnish sugar firm had fallen into a sugar barrel during work. A while later he was building a boat in Oulu for the sugar export and gave it the name Sokeri-Jussi. Unfortunately the boat was sold during the Second World War to Italy, where it supposedly melted away in the Mediterranean Sea.
The Restaurant Sokeri-Jussin Kievari has pampered its guests since 2001. It has seating for 150 guests spread over two floors. During the bright Nordic summer the inviting outdoor terrace offers an additional 100 seats. The Sokeri-Jussin Kievari serves local country inn dishes using the best Finnish ingredients. The restaurant is known for its traditional Finnish cuisine and its specialities from the Oulu region.
