“The Coastal Experience” will open your eyes to the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. After the ice age the land, sand dunes and islands have risen from the sea. You will get know the nature, the culture and the history of the area. By guided tours you will hear stories about the local nature and people who lived in the area. First we make a boat trip to Maakalla Island - and find out about the special history and nature of this fishermen island. On the coast you will hear the history of the holiday resort and see the beautiful sand dunes. You will be taken on the paddling excursion to the harsh but beautiful Rahja Archipelago. You can also familiarize with SUP (Stand up paddle boarding) and Nordic Walking.
Arrival to Kalajoki to the Hiekkasärkät Tourism Resort. Accommodation in a rustic atmosphere in a traditional Ostrobothnian style log house at the Tapion Tupa (country holiday accommodation). 2-person rooms, own shower, toilet and TV in each room. Shared living room with hot plate and fridge.
Hiekkasärkät (Sand Dunes) is in Finland well known for its large sunny beach. There is a lot of holiday apartments, spa, small hotels, restaurants etc. on the area.
18.00h: Sauna. Enjoy of the warmth of the Finish sauna (in a separate building) and take some relaxing time for next days.
8.00 - 9.00h - Breakfast
10.00h - Visit in the Kalajoki Visitor Centre. Exhibition in tree floors, sea nature, special features of the local nature, history and culture of fishing, seal hunting and seafaring from the time of sailing boats.
12.00 – 17.00h - Boat trip to Maakalla Island. It has risen from the sea and lies in the distance of one hours boat ride from the coast. The islands have a special history of Baltic herring fishing and have therefore an Autonomy inherited from the 17th century. In the middle of island stays an old wooden church build by fishermen in 1780. For lunch we taste the fresh fish taken from the surrounding sea made by the fisherman’s way. In the evening own program.
8.00 – 9.00h - Breakfast. After it we pack our back bags and leave for two days paddling trip on the sea.
11.00h - Kayaking in the Rahja Archipelago which consists of about one hundred islands of a varying size. A short guidance with the kayaks and paddling by the guides. Depending on the weather conditions (wind speed and direction) we chose the route and paddle to Lepänen Island. We may visit some other island to take a break and have some snack. On Lepänen there is a cottage with sauna. We warm up the sauna and afterwards have a delicious dinner. There is no electricity on the island. The night we sleep in the cottage just listening the sounds of sea and nature.
9.00 - 10.00h - Breakfast
11.00 – 16.00h - Packing and paddling back to coast using a different route. Breaks on the islands like yesterday. Back to Tapion Tupa, in the evening own program.

10.00 – 13.00h - SUP (Stand up paddle boarding) in the Surf Centre in the beach of camping site. A different way of paddling. A short course and then you can do it by your selves! Lunch (not included in the price).
15.00-17.00h - Hiking trip in the sea (in July and August) or Nordic Walking on the beach. Walking in the low sea water on the sand bottom shaped by waves is very relaxing for your feet and in the same time you can enjoy the sun and fresh sea air. When Nordic Walking we first choose the suitable poles, guide to the technics, warm up and then walk along the beach and wooden trails. At the end some stretching.
8.00 - 9.00h - Breakfast
10.00-13.00h - A short visit to Kalajoki Centre and the historical, old centre of Kalajoki, called Plassi. The oldest buildings in the village are from the 18th century. Depending on the month, it is possible to make a visit to a fishing museum, a former residence of a saw mill owner and a room of a former worker of the saw mill. Kalajoki has a long history of potteries. We visit one of them and see ceramics designed by three ceramists.
Lunch: Soup lunch in a nice little restaurant in the centre.
In the Tapion Tupa shop, you can find handmade souvenirs and other local products; handicrafts, delicacies, etc. There is a rustic restaurant with local food.
There is possibly to rent bicycle at the Tapion Tupa and take a ride for ex. to the Centre of Kalajoki city (6 km) for shopping. Or you can make a visit to a pottery, or to an old river mill or just to bike around in the Hiekkasärkät area.
For those who are interested in golf there is a Golf course in the Hiekkasärkät area about 3 km from the Tapion Tupa. The Spa SaniFani is a splendid place to recover after a hiking day. In the Spa pool area you can enjoy the tropical heat in the bath's streaming river or in the whirlpools. There is a fitness pool for swimmers, massaging water-jets for relaxing and a water slide for everyone who is still a child at heart. There is also a gym and bowling alley. Under the same roof you can find the Day Spa Sun with massages, bath, aroma and special treatments (by request).
Lohilaakso fishing activity center is a good place to try your fishing luck and catch salmon. Then you can have the catch prepared for a good dinner. In the Kalajoki Visitor Center you can see exhibition about the nature, sand dunes and sea in the area. Of course you can just go to the beach and swim in the sea and admire the colourful sun setting in to the sea.
Restaurants: In the Hiekkasärkät area you can find many different restaurants to have every evening a different kind of delicious dinner from steaks to fish.
Note: When coming on this tour, you should have your own out door gear with you; comfortable shoes, also wind- and waterproof gear is recommendable. You will be on the sea for a part of your tour, the weather conditions should be taken in to consideration. More information from the product supplier.
