Finland once again ranks first in the World Happiness Report in 2026. Three other Nordic countries – Iceland, Denmark, and Sweden – also make it into the top five. But what makes people in Northern Europe so happy?
For nine years in a row, Nordic countries have led the ranking. Experts attribute this to humor, calmness, and a high level of life satisfaction. Finns, for example, are not obsessed with being happy. Instead, they appreciate what they have and enjoy the small things in life. Danes are also known for their relaxed and positive attitude, supported by trust, time spent outdoors, and social stability.
For young Finns like 17-year-old Anniina Vahto from Helsinki, equality, education, and health are key sources of happiness. Experts also emphasize the importance of nature and a moderate use of social media. Spending time outdoors, going to the sauna, and maintaining meaningful social connections are essential factors for wellbeing, as well as traditions that support happiness in Finland and across the Nordic countries.
