Viking Line is a key player in Finnish tourism and Baltic connectivity

Viking Line has recently celebrated a remarkable achievement—serving a quarter of a billion passengers since its inception. This milestone was reached in August, during the peak of the summer season.

From humble beginnings to major regional connector

Viking Line started with the simple goal of improving transport between the Finnish mainland and Åland, benefiting local residents. Today, the company is a crucial connection for passengers and cargo across the Baltic Sea, linking the Nordic countries with mainland Europe.

"This is an incredible milestone for us," said Viking Line CEO Jan Hanses. "We now connect people around the Baltic, maintain vital cargo routes, and offer unique Nordic travel experiences. We are deeply thankful to our customers, staff, and key partners for this success."

A pillar of Finnish tourism

With five vessels, Viking Line serves around five million passengers annually. The company's scheduled car ferry services are vital to Finland's tourism industry. According to Visit Finland, about five million international trips are made to Finland each year.

"Interest in the Nordic region has surged since the pandemic," said Susanne Andersson, CEO of Visit Sweden. "Many tourists, especially those from faraway places, want to explore multiple Nordic countries in a single trip. Strong transport links, like those provided by Viking Line, are crucial for the future of tourism in the region."

Viking Line is not only a cornerstone of Finnish tourism but also a leader in sustainable travel. The company has been recognized for its environmental efforts, which align with Finland’s goal to be a top destination for sustainable tourism.
