Finnish ferry operator honoured for innovation, sustainability, and outstanding service at the Finnish Travel Gala

Viking Line, Finland’s largest maritime transport employer, has been awarded Transport Company of the Year at the Finnish Travel Gala. The award, presented by the Association of Finnish Travel Industry (SMAL), was decided through a combination of expert jury evaluation and public voting.

“This is a great honour for all of us at Viking Line – a recognition of our long-term efforts and commitment to Finnish maritime excellence,” said Jan Hanses, acting CEO and member of the company’s board. “All five of our vessels sail under the Finnish flag, and our customer satisfaction is higher than ever.”

Beyond its strong passenger record, Viking Line continues to lead with ambitious environmental initiatives. This summer, the company unveiled its Helios concept – a plan for the world’s largest fully electric-powered car ferry, designed for the busy Helsinki–Tallinn route. The project could be realized in the early 2030s, setting a new global benchmark for emission-free sea travel. Already today, travellers and freight customers can choose to go completely fossil-free by paying a supplementary fee. Viking Line has also increased its renewable biofuel use sixfold this year. “Emission-free maritime transport is no longer a utopia – we want to be pioneers in making it reality,” says Hanses.

A pillar of Finnish connectivity

In 2024, Viking Line carried 4.6 million passengers and 1.8 million tonnes of cargo across its five vessels – Viking Cinderella, Gabriella, Viking Glory, Viking Grace and Viking XPRS. The company holds a 43% market share on the Helsinki–Stockholm route and 70% on the Turku–Stockholm route, solidifying its key role in Finland’s connectivity and supply security. With more than 2,000 employees, all vessels under the Finnish Ship Registry, and a growing focus on green innovation, Viking Line continues to steer Finnish maritime transport toward a sustainable future.
