Finnish airport operator Finavia is responding to the steady growth in tourism to Lapland by announcing the expansion of the passenger terminal at Rovaniemi Airport, set to begin in autumn 2025. The project aims to meet rising demand and ensure modern, efficient infrastructure for the increasing number of visitors to the region.
Rovaniemi is one of Finland’s most popular winter destinations, particularly among international travelers. With this expansion, Finavia aims to ensure that the airport remains fully equipped to handle growing volumes in the years to come.
“Lapland is one of Finland’s most attractive travel destinations. We want to create the conditions for sustainable growth and a high-quality travel experience,” says Jari Hannu, Director of Lapland Airports at Finavia.
The terminal expansion will include upgrades to passenger waiting areas and security checkpoints, as well as improvements in baggage handling systems and technical facilities. The goal is to streamline passenger flow and improve the overall travel experience, especially during the peak winter season. Construction is scheduled to begin in autumn 2025, with further details on the design and timeline to be released later this year.
As with previous development projects, Finavia places strong emphasis on sustainability and energy efficiency. The expansion will be carried out with environmental responsibility in mind and will contribute to the long-term goal of operating the airport in a more eco-friendly way.
With the planned expansion of Rovaniemi Airport, Finavia is strategically strengthening the infrastructure for international tourism in Northern Finland. The terminal upgrade is a key step in further positioning Lapland as a year-round destination—ensuring a smooth and enjoyable start to the Arctic adventure for travelers from around the world.
