Baltic Queen and Victoria I honor the legendary illustrator with a creative onboard family program

This summer, Tallink Silja Line invites passengers to set sail into the world of imagination. In celebration of Ilon Wikland’s 95th birthday – the beloved illustrator of numerous Astrid Lindgren classics – two cruise ferries, the Baltic Queen and Victoria I, are being transformed into floating exhibitions filled with stories, art, and childhood memories.

A summer of stories

Starting June 19, guests traveling on the Tallinn–Helsinki (Victoria I) and Stockholm–Tallinn (Baltic Queen) routes can enjoy a special onboard program dedicated to Ilon Wikland’s life and work. In addition to an exhibition showcasing her lovingly detailed illustrations, the ships will feature multilingual “book suitcases” with a selection of her illustrated works, cozy reading corners, and creative drawing stations for children. Young passengers will also have the chance to win prizes from Ilon’s Wonderland in Haapsalu for their artwork.

Collaboration with Ilon’s wonderland

The initiative was developed in close partnership with Ilon’s Wonderland, the Ilon Wikland Center located in Haapsalu, western Estonia. Director Maarja Kõuts highlights the emotional resonance of Wikland’s illustrations: “Her drawings bring generations together — reminding us of what childhood feels like, no matter where we come from.”

Tallink Silja Line is equally enthusiastic: “Wikland’s illustrations build a cultural bridge between Estonia and Sweden,” says Piret Mürk-Dubout, a board member of Tallink Grupp. “Through this collaboration, we want to inspire families across Europe to explore Wikland’s world — both onboard and in Estonia itself

Sailing with stories until August

  • Victoria I (Tallinn–Helsinki): Wikland-themed summer from June 19 to August 10
  • Baltic Queen (Stockholm–Tallinn): Program runs until August 21

Wikland even designed the children’s playroom aboard the Victoria I. Onboard shops will also offer exclusive souvenirs featuring her iconic illustrations – from postcards to collectible items.

From Haapsalu to the world

Ilon Wikland was born in 1930 in Estonia and spent her childhood in Haapsalu. In 1944, she fled to Sweden during World War II, where she began an extraordinary career. Her collaboration with Astrid Lindgren began in 1953 and left a lasting mark on generations of readers around the world. Even today, her illustrations reflect the landscapes and emotions of her Baltic childhood.
