Salpausselkä Geopark was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) on 13 April. Salpausselkä Geopark stretches from the first Salpausselkä to southern Päijänne and consists of six municipalities in Päijänne Tavastia: Lahti, Hollola, Heinola, Asikkala, Sysmä and Padasjoki.
Pulkkilanharju, part of which runs through the Päijänne part of the national park, is probably the most well known scenic attraction. This area has some of Finland's oldest settlements as well.
