International visitors drive strong growth in the Norwegian tourism sector

Norway recorded a new tourism record in 2025, with 40.6 million overnight stays in commercial accommodation establishments. According to data from Statistics Norway (SSB), this represents an increase of around 5.2 percent compared with 2024. The growth was primarily driven by international visitors, who accounted for 14.2 million overnight stays, marking a 14 percent increase year-on-year.

European markets dominate international demand

Around three quarters of all international overnight stays in Norway came from European markets. Germany remained the largest source market with nearly 2.6 million overnight stays, followed by Sweden with 1.3 million.

Other key European markets included:

  • Netherlands: 985,000 overnight stays

  • United Kingdom: 977,000 overnight stays

  • Denmark: 896,000 overnight stays

All of these markets recorded a noticeable increase compared with the previous year. Denmark and the United Kingdom also stand out for their strong winter travel demand, with roughly half of overnight stays from these countries occurring during the winter season.

Asian markets return to pre-pandemic levels

Tourism from Asia also continued to recover strongly. Norwegian accommodation providers recorded 1.2 million overnight stays from Asian travelers in 2025, representing an increase of 30 percent compared with 2024. The number of overnight stays from Asian markets has now returned to pre-pandemic levels, with China accounting for the largest share of growth. Overnight stays from Chinese visitors reached 392,000, a 78 percent increase compared with the previous year.

Oslo and Vestland lead regional statistics

In terms of destinations, Oslo recorded the highest number of overnight stays with 6.9 million, followed by Vestland with 6.2 million.

Other regions with high overnight volumes include:

  • Innlandet: 3.7 million

  • Trøndelag: 3 million

  • Nordland: 2.8 million

Some northern destinations also recorded particularly high shares of international guests. Svalbard led the ranking with 65 percent foreign overnight stays, followed by Troms with 55 percent.

Hotels drive most of the growth

The number of overnight stays in Norwegian accommodation increased by around two million between 2024 and 2025, with hotels accounting for the largest share of this growth. Hotels recorded an increase of 1.4 million overnight stays, bringing the total to 28 million hotel stays in 2025. Most of this growth was generated by international visitors. Camping sites also saw increased demand with 8.4 million overnight stays, while holiday cabins and hostels recorded around four million stays.
