Jyväskylä strengthens its position as a gateway to Alvar Aalto architecture and cultural heritage

A new visitor centre will open at the Aalto2 Museum Centre in Jyväskylä in autumn 2026, creating a central starting point for travelers interested in Finnish architecture, design and UNESCO heritage sites.

The free-to-access facility will help visitors discover some of Central Finland’s most significant cultural attractions while providing information, inspiration and guided experiences connected to the region’s heritage.

A gateway to Alvar Aalto’s legacy

One of the centre’s main themes will be the work of Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, whose influence on modern architecture and design continues to attract visitors from around the world.

The exhibition will highlight thirteen Aalto-designed buildings that are currently being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status. Among them are the Säynätsalo Town Hall, the Muuratsalo Experimental House and the Aalto-designed university campus in Jyväskylä.

Combining architecture, heritage and Finnish lifestyle

In addition to architecture, the visitor centre will introduce travelers to UNESCO-listed attractions such as Petäjävesi Old Church and the Struve Geodetic Arc.

The region also plans to showcase its strong sauna culture, offering visitors a broader understanding of Finnish lifestyle and cultural traditions alongside its architectural heritage. By bringing these attractions together in one location, the visitor centre aims to make cultural tourism easier to access and encourage visitors to explore the wider region.

New opportunities for cultural travel programs

Guided tours to several Aalto sites are already available for the 2026 summer season, with additional cultural experiences currently under development. For tour operators, the new visitor centre provides an additional anchor point for cultural itineraries, design-focused travel and educational programs in Finland.

What this means for tour operators

Interest in architecture, design and cultural heritage continues to grow across European travel markets. The new visitor centre strengthens Central Finland’s position as a destination that combines internationally recognised design, UNESCO heritage and authentic Finnish culture.

Cultural tourism remains an important growth segment across Europe. Developments such as the new Aalto visitor centre create fresh opportunities for thematic travel programs and special-interest groups.
