Scandic Hotels has unveiled plans to open a new alpine hotel in the popular winter sports destination of Sälen. Scheduled to open in the 2027/2028 winter season, the hotel will feature 120 rooms, 16 apartments, a restaurant, conference facilities, and a generous wellness area with a pool, sauna, and gym. Ideally located between Tandådalen and Hundfjället, the hotel will offer ski-in, ski-out access for guests.
Sälen has grown in popularity not just in winter, but increasingly in summer as well—thanks to the rise in hiking and cycling tourism. Scandic sees this as an opportunity to strengthen its Nordic presence through strategic expansion into attractive locations. “With our first hotel in the Swedish mountains, we’re reinforcing our footprint in the North and catering to both domestic and international guests,” says Jens Mathiesen, CEO of Scandic Hotels Group.
The hotel will be built in classic chalet style, featuring a wooden façade, balconies, and large panoramic windows. A new ski lift will connect guests directly to the slopes. Indoors, open fireplaces, natural light, and regional materials will create a warm, welcoming ambiance. The wellness offering includes an indoor-outdoor pool, various saunas, and a fully equipped fitness room.
The hotel will meet the rigorous standards of the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, the official environmental certification for the Nordic countries. This includes the use of renewable energy, reduction of single-use packaging, water-saving technologies, climate-friendly food offerings, and a strong commitment to reducing food waste.
The hotel is being developed in collaboration with local property owner Lima Besparingsskog. “This hotel project is a win for the region—it creates new jobs and reinforces Sälen as a year-round destination,” says Fredrik Eriksson, Property Manager at Lima Besparingsskog. With this project, Scandic takes another strong step toward promoting sustainable and nature-based tourism in Sweden’s mountain landscapes.
