A new expedition product for the Arctic is entering the market. Expedition travel company Secret Atlas has announced a combined Svalbard and East Greenland micro-expedition cruise for summer 2027, designed for travelers seeking a deeper, small-group exploration of the polar region. The two-week voyage will connect two of the Arctic’s most iconic destinations in a single itinerary, travelling from the fjords of Svalbard to the dramatic landscapes of East Greenland.
The journey will take place aboard the expedition vessel MV Freya, an ice-strengthened ship accommodating only 12 guests. According to the company, the limited group size allows the expedition team to access narrow fjords, remote coastlines and landing sites that are often inaccessible to larger cruise vessels.
The expedition is scheduled to depart in August 2027, a period when Arctic wildlife activity and visibility are typically high. Travelers may encounter species such as Arctic foxes, migratory seabirds and whales, while sightings of polar bears on sea ice remain a possibility depending on conditions.
The itinerary includes exploration of both the Svalbard archipelago and Scoresbysund in East Greenland, the world’s largest fjord system. The expedition will also cross the Fram Strait, one of the key passages between the Arctic Ocean and the North Atlantic.
Operating under the midnight sun, the voyage offers continuous daylight, creating extended opportunities for wildlife observation and shore landings throughout the journey.
The new itinerary reflects a wider trend in polar tourism: increasing demand for smaller expedition formats and more immersive travel experiences. Micro-expeditions with limited passenger numbers aim to offer flexible itineraries and closer contact with remote landscapes compared to traditional cruise formats. For travel planners working with Arctic destinations, this type of expedition product highlights the continuing diversification of high-end adventure travel in the polar regions.
