Havila Voyages is taking bold steps toward greener shipping. The company plans to operate the Bergen–Kirkenes route completely climate-neutral by autumn 2025, using a combination of biogas and advanced battery systems.
“Klimaneutrality should become the minimum requirement in future tenders – and we are ready to deliver today,” says Havila CEO Bent Martini. He also warns that inconsistent political decisions hold back investments, as many stakeholders wait for clearer frameworks.
The goal is to power the entire journey with 100% biogas. If successful, the round trip of more than 5,000 nautical miles will serve as a large-scale test case for sustainable coastal shipping.
According to HAV Group CEO Gunnar Larsen, Norway’s maritime cluster is prepared: “We can build a fleet that protects the environment and strengthens local value creation – from design to construction.”
Havila’s initiative underlines one message: climate-friendly shipping is already technically feasible, but it requires cooperation between industry, politics, and investors.
