Record overnight stays across Northern Europe

Demand for travel to Scandinavia continues to develop dynamically: Sweden, Norway and Denmark each recorded new all-time highs in tourist overnight stays in 2025. International markets are driving this growth – alongside Europe, the US market is gaining importance, while Germany remains one of the key source markets. The airline SAS also confirms this trend, reporting passenger growth of more than 10% on routes to Scandinavian destinations.

“Heading North”: complementary travel types on the rise

At the same time, travel behaviour is shifting: Scandinavia is increasingly being added to traditional sun and city trips rather than replacing them. Nature-based experiences, reliability and a slower pace align well with current market demand. In its Travel Trends 2026 report, SAS describes this development as “Heading North”. For tour operators, this creates additional potential to expand existing programmes with Nordic products and target new customer segments.
