Björndal Arctic Lodge: Western Farm reinvents itself for international tourism

From Wild West to Arctic experience hub in Northern Sweden

A major transformation is underway in Boden, Swedish Lapland. The well-known Western Farm is set to relaunch as Björndal Arctic Lodge, marking a strategic shift toward international tourism and year-round operations.

A clear shift toward international demand

The western-themed concept that once defined the farm is being phased out. Instead, the new Björndal Arctic Lodge will focus on authentic Arctic experiences tailored to international visitors. The decision reflects a broader market development: demand for Arctic nature, culture, and immersive experiences continues to grow, while themed attractions are losing relevance.

Significant investment and expansion

The transformation comes with an investment of approximately SEK 40 million. The new concept includes new hotel rooms, increasing capacity to around 200 beds, a restaurant and spa facilities, a wider range of activities for both summer and winter and year-round operations. The development will take place in stages, with the full concept expected to be completed by November 2027.

Positioning as an activity hub

Björndal Arctic Lodge aims to become more than just an accommodation provider. The vision is to establish the lodge as a central hub for activities in the region, working closely with local partners. Collaboration with nearby providers is already part of the concept, strengthening the overall destination offering and creating synergies within the region.

A sign of a larger industry trend

The repositioning of Western Farm highlights a wider shift in Nordic tourism:

  • Moving away from artificial or themed concepts

  • Toward authentic, place-based experiences

  • With a stronger focus on international markets

For tour operators and travel designers, this reflects the increasing importance of products that are rooted in local identity and offer year-round potential. Projects like Björndal Arctic Lodge underline the ongoing development of Swedish Lapland as a competitive, export-ready destination. For buyers, this means more high-quality, scalable products, stronger regional cooperation, and new opportunities to build diverse, year-round itineraries.
