Connected cabins open new revenue streams for airlines

airBaltic has introduced a new inflight shopping experience by integrating AirMall into its onboard WiFi portal. The airline is the first Starlink-connected carrier to roll out the solution, turning passenger devices into a digital retail channel.

Shopping directly via onboard WiFi

AirMall allows travelers to browse and purchase products from over 20,000 brands during their flight. Orders are delivered after arrival, eliminating the need for onboard stock or crew involvement. The platform uses passenger data such as destination and preferences to offer personalised product recommendations.

With this addition, airBaltic is expanding its Skynet WiFi platform into a broader digital ecosystem. The solution integrates with loyalty programs and enables passengers to earn points on purchases. AirMall joins existing partners such as Booking.com, SIXT and GetYourGuide within the platform.

A shift towards connected travel experiences

The launch highlights a growing trend in aviation: airlines are transforming the cabin into a digital environment that goes beyond connectivity. Instead of focusing solely on WiFi access, carriers are increasingly using onboard platforms to generate additional revenue and enhance the passenger experience.

While inflight shopping is not directly relevant for destination planning, it reflects how airlines are evolving their business models. For the travel industry, this signals a broader shift towards integrated digital ecosystems, where travel, services and retail are increasingly connected throughout the customer journey.
