Oulu Region: Local Culture – A day on a Finnish farm

Spend an interesting day on a Finnish farm in the village of Ylikiiminki. Different tasks and afterwards the well-deserved relaxation are waiting for you! During the morning you work 1,5-2 hours either in- or outdoors, depending on the season. Works include collecting fire wood traditionally, fishing. We bake regional products such as bread, barley bread and bread cheese (leipä-juusto) in the 100-year old natural stone oven.
From mushrooms and wild berries we prepare delicious dishes or preserve them. Our guest may chose, which handcraft they would like to try.
In the afternoon we heat the stove of the Sauna. For preparation we need to bind the Sauna vihta, a leafy bunch of branches of silver birch to gently beat oneself in the Sauna. This has a relaxing effect on the muscles and the blood circulation. We also pick wild herbs for a nice footbath and prepare the Sauna water.
While we are having a Sauna, we will hear about the development and history of the Sauna tradition from the past until today. We will get to know the Sauna as a part of the Finnish culture, as a physical and spiritual experience of the Finnish life and of health in general.
We will listen to traditional Sauna-spells form the national epic of the Finns, the Kalevala.
If the weather is fine we can spend the rest of the evening at the campfire. Otherwise we have a cosy evening in the comfortable farm cottage.
All activities take place on the farm or within its close proximity.
Duration: 9.30 am. – 8/9 pm., 10 hours
